Brexit Updates for EU Students
UK Universities and EU Students
On Friday 31st January 2020 the UK formally left the European Union and is now in a transition period until December 31st 2020.
UK universities and Study Globally have always supported diversity, tolerance and internationalism and the UK remains one of the most welcoming destinations in the world for an EU student looking to gain a world class education.
All universities strongly believe that European and international students make a vital contribution to UK higher education and society as a whole. Learn more below with our FAQ and if you have any questions, please contact Study-Globally and we will be happy to help.
Brexit FAQ
- Will EU students have to pay the same university fees as international students to study in the UK?
At present, EU students studying at a university or further education institution have ‘home fee status’ in the UK. This means that if you’re an EU student, you pay the same tuition fees as students from the part of the UK where your university is located (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales). EU students studying in the rest of the UK as an undergraduate can apply for a student loan from the relevant student funding body to cover any tuition fees.
- Will EU students need a visa to study in the UK?
If you arrive in the UK before 1 January 2021, you will not need a visa. If you plan to stay in the UK longer than 1 January 2021 (for example, to complete your full course), you’ll need to apply online for the EU Settlement Scheme . The scheme is free of charge. You should apply as soon as possible after you’ve arrived in the UK, and by 30 June 2021. If you plan to arrive in the UK from 1 January 2021 onwards, you will need to apply for a student visa if you are studying a course which is longer than six months in length.
- What is the EU Settlement Scheme?
You will be eligible to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme if you are an EU national with a valid passport and are resident in the UK or arrive by 31 December 2020. If by the same date you have been continually living in the UK for 5 years, you will be able to apply to stay in the UK indefinitely (settled status).
- Will a UK degree still be recognised in the EU?
The recognition and esteem of a UK degree will not change in Europe or internationally.
